ROAD TRIP THROUGH THE CANADIAN MOUNTAINS WITH FAIRMONT HOTELS

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Whether its summer or winter, a road trip through the Canadian mountains of British Columbia and Alberta is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Compass Tours is proud to be associated with the Fairmont hotels that are dotted across the region. This is a collection of properties renowned for their luxury – and they’re probably some of the most-photographed hotels in Canada – if not the world!

Surrounded by towering mountains are the castles of the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Also in the Albert Rocky Mountains is the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge with its village of cedar chalets and heritage log cabins, as well as traditional hotel rooms. Further west, in the Coast Mountains, is the flagship hotel at the world-famous Whistler resort, home of the alpine and nordic events at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort.

In cosmopolitan Vancouver are the historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver which is located downtown, the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel at the Vancouver cruise ship terminal at Canada Place, and the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel.

Both ends of this trip are conveniently served by international airports – Vancouver International (YVR) and Calgary International (YYC).

If you’d like to inquire about any of these exceptional Fairmont hotels, we would be happy to provide a free, no-obligation quote, so contact us today!

In the mountains of beautiful British Columbia, spring is only now getting a good toe-hold with bright new leaves appearing, and wildlife returning to the slopes!

Spring In The Mountains

Despite the warmer days, and the fact that the golf courses of Whistler, Sun Peaks, Panorama and Revelstoke have been open for a couple of weeks already, chilly nights mean that frost delays will be part of your day for a couple of weeks yet!

WHTI Passport Requirement Deadline Approaches

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Although the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was set up by, and applies to, people entering the USA, it has an impact on many Canadian visitors, a large number of which travel to Canada from, or via, the USA.

Passports

In just 10 weeks, the WHTI enters its next phase. That is, everyone (including American and Canadian citizens) entering the USA, whether by air, land or sea (whether they’re just transitting the US, are visiting, or returning to that country), must present a valid passport upon entry. Children under 16 years of age who are US citizens may present either their birth certificate, or other proof of citizenship such as a naturalization certificate, or citizenship card.

US citizens who intend leaving the USA on vacation or business, and returning after June 1, 2009, should apply for their passports now – it currently takes about four weeks for a passport to be issued, assuming there are no delays due to missing information.

It was recently revealed that about 75% of adult Canadians already have valid passports, an unprecendented level of documentation. The same, however, can apparently not be said for our southern neighbours who, despite frequent travel to Canada, are not properly prepared for the WHTI deadline.

There is no indication from the US government that this deadline will be extended, so a rush on American passport offices can be expected over the next few weeks.

Visitors to Canada should ensure that they have the correct travel documentation and, if necessary, a visa.

Jamaican Bobsled Team To Establish Base At Pemberton?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

There are solid rumours flying about that the Jamaican Bobsled Team will be establishing an Olympic base for themselves in Pemberton, a rural community 30 minutes’ drive north of Whistler.

Jamaican Bobsled Team

The JBT, immortalized in the Disney movie “Cool Runnings”, is a good fit for Pemberton, say stakeholders, because Pemberton, like the Jamaican Bobsled Team, is a bit different, a step off the beaten track.

For their part, the JBT is excited at the prospect of returning to Canada, where they got their start in elite winter sports competition at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. Twenty years ago, the team greatly appreciated the support they received from Canadian fans, while they were met with scorn and ridicule from many of the international sporting bodies.

The Whistler Sliding Centre will be hosting the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions on its newly completed tracks at the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics.

Pemberton  is a small farming community half an hour’s drive north of Whistler. The village was in the news for its successful Pemberton Music Festival this past summer, and the beautiful valley is renowned for its backcountry adventure opportunities, along with its seed potato industry.

Holiday Savings as Canadian Dollar Weakens

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

For the first time in many months, the Canadian Dollar has weakened substantially, allowing the major world currencies to gain ground and make Canadian mountain holidays more affordable!

Canadian Dollar

Today, one US Dollar will buy more than C$1.20! One Pound Sterling will buy more than C$2.05! One Euro will buy more than C$1.59! And one Australian Dollar will buy more than C$0.83!

This effectively makes a Canadian ski holiday cheaper for our international guests! So, if you’re thinking of taking advantage of these holiday savings, now’s the time to act!

Cold Weather Presages Great Ski Season

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Cooler than normal temperatures across southern British Columbia have brought plenty of early snow to the peaks of the region’s mountain resorts! And the snow guns are firing on the lower slopes, too!

These photo’s of Whistler, Sun Peaks and Panorama, were taken today (Thursday, October 16th):

early snow

The larger resorts plan to open early, as usual, for ski team training. And this year they’re getting one of the earliest starts ever on slope preparation!

This will produce a pay-off for skiers and boarders during the regular season because base conditions will be of a better quality right from the start!
